At room temperature, antimony appears as a brittle, shiny material with a crystalline structure that limits its use in pure form. However, it is in alloys that antimony truly excels. When added to metals such as tin, lead and copper, it enhances their hardness, wear resistance, and thermal stability. As a result, antimony is widely used in the production of antifriction metals, bearing components, typeface alloys, and even in certain solder types.

Advanced Technological Applications

Beyond metallurgy, antimony also plays a role in high-tech sectors: it is used in small amounts for manufacturing semiconductors, in the production of specialty glass, and as a flame retardant in plastics and textiles—thanks to its ability to react with other elements to form fire-resistant compounds.

Toxicity, Safety, and Strategic Criticality of Antimony

Despite its functional advantages, antimony must be handled with care. Some of its compounds are considered toxic, making safe handling essential, especially in powdered or volatile forms. Furthermore, its availability is limited: antimony is classified as a "critical" element from a strategic perspective, as its production is concentrated in just a few parts of the world, particularly China.

A Long History of Use Between Antiquity and Innovation

Antimony's history is long and fascinating. Already known in ancient Egypt, it was used as a cosmetic in the form of black sulfide for eye makeup. During the Middle Ages, it was also regarded as an alchemical remedy, and by the 19th century, it began to play a technical role with the rise of industrial printing and modern metallurgy. Today, antimony remains a valuable resource that must be used with expertise and responsibility. Its unique properties make it irreplaceable in specific production contexts, while the challenge for the future lies in securing sustainable sourcing and efficient recovery from end-of-life materials.
